Because of the Gulf Stream from the south, and cold arctic waters from the north, Northern Cape Breton has some of the most abundant fish stocks in the world. It is one of life’s simple pleasures to cast a line overboard and catch a wily, omega-3 rich mackerel. We are happy to accommodate anyone who wishes to go deep sea fishing on our 4:30 pm Whale Watching Tour when the fish are biting the best.

We focus on Mackerel because it is available to catch for the entire season. Plus, mackerel is wonderful fried up in a pan fresh out of the water. We also have the option to catch cod while in season, but the cod season varies from year to year.

In addition, from May to early July, one can experience the wonder of lobster fishing. During each tour we haul a lobster trap and give a demonstration on traditional lobster fishing.

Remember, you keep what you catch so you can take it with you to cook up enjoy. If you don't have a place to cook the fresh fish, then the folks at the Bay Cafe and Meat Cove Welcome Centre will gladly cook it for you! Just take the fish to them and in minutes you will have an authentic Cape Breton meal, caught with your own hands.

Just in case the fish aren't biting, fresh and fresh frozen fish are available at the Fisherman's Co-op in Bay St. Lawrence. Plus, throughout the fishing season there are countless lobster dinners and crab suppers at our many community halls. In addition, for those seeking seafood, we highly recommend Aspy Bay Oysters at the Hideaway Campground and Oyster Market.
